Christine Rosholt represents a
fresh
voice in jazz standards in the Twin Cities. She brings two decades of
performance experience to the stage, with roots going back to the Children’s
Theater Company
and including a variety of types of public performance ranging from
original performance art pieces to traditional theater to singing in a
variety of groups. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree from
the School of the Art Institute of Chicago majoring
in
Performance Art and Photography. Her career as a jazz vocalist began in
October of 2002. She currently works with many of the best jazz
musicians in the Twin Cities and beyond in a variety of venues.
She held a
weekly Wednesday night gig at Café
Havana for two and a half years and still performs there
regularly. Christine is also the featured vocalist in Beasley's
Big Band. From 2005 to 2006 Christine was a member the Jazz
Vocal Coalition,
an organization dedicated to jazz singing with chapters in New York,
Los Angeles and the Twin Cities, now defunct, the Minnesota group has
reorganized as The Jazz Vocalists of Minnesota (JzVMn).
Major inspirations include Anita
O’Day, Annie Ross, Blossom Dearie,
Kurt Elling, Carmen McRae, Chris Connor, Diana Krall, Ella Fitzgerald,
Frank
Sinatra, Jane Monheit, Joni Mitchell, June Christy, Karrin Allyson,
Nancy Wilson, Sarah Vaughan, Stacy Kent, Susannah McCorkle, Tierney
Sutton, The Roches. Christine says: "I especially like the Jazz
standards from the 1930s and 40s because they’re timeless,
they swing,
and they’re sentimental without being syrupy."
Christine performed in two Minnesota
Orchestra events last summer: on June 16, 2007, the MN
Orchestra Symphony Ball 2007: Red Hot Jazz, featuring Tony
Bennett at The Historic Depot in
Minneapolis. On July 13, 2007 she sang in "'Round Midnight"
for the Macy's Day of Music on the Orchestra Hall - Main Stage.
Singers, Debbie Duncan, Connie Evingson, Bruce A. Henry & Arne
Fogel also performed.
In the summer of 2007 Christine joined the
cast of “Girl
Singers of the Hit Parade – A Salute to the Great Female
Vocalists of the 50’s” with shows at the Old
Log Theater, Lyric Arts Main Street Stage and the Mable Tainter Theater
in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Two quotes on the show:
Because
I respected the work of Norton Lewellen, I booked THE GIRL
SINGERS OF THE HIT PARADE into the Old Log.
The audience and I were delighted with their performance. It was more
than a concert, it was a show carefully put together with excellent
musical arrangements, good choreography, and marvelous singing.
-Don
Stolz
In my opinion the "Girl
Singers"
is one of the finest shows to come out of the Midwest in a long,
long time. Fronted by four very talented women, they mesmerized the
audience as they took them on a trip back to the 50s and down "memory
lane". The show presents a tribute to five of the best female
vocalists that ever sang in a microphone! Forget Elvis
tributes! This show is romantic, funny, sentimental, sexy,
educational and,
very professional! I'll be contacting my clients
regarding this show!

On January 14, 2007
Christine presented a concert as part of the Twin City Jazz
Society Jazz From J to Z concert series: My Shining Hour - A
Tribute to the Music of Harold Arlen with Christine Rosholt, Connie
Olson & Bruce A. Henry at the Bloomington
Art Center with musicians, Rick Carlson, Keith Boyles and Jay
Epstein. Harold
Arlen wrote many classic jazz standards including, Ac-cent-tchu-ate The
Positive, Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea, Over the Rainbow
(and all of the other songs in the Wizard of Oz), Stormy Weather, My
Shining Hour, Let's Fall in Love....and many more. The concert was sold
out.
In February of 2006 Rosholt released a brand
new CD entitled "Detour Ahead" at Rossi's
Blue Star Jazz Room in Minneapolis, the show was sold out.
Detour Ahead is playing on the
airwaves across the USA, Canada, Australia and some European countries.
Based on Ms. Rosholt's previously released demo CD (2003), her airplay
and name recognition in the Twin Cities, fans are requesting the Detour
Ahead in Twin Cities record stores. In September 2006 "Detour
Ahead" was nominated for Jazz Recording of the Year in the Minnesota
Music Awards.
On December 2, 2005 Christine was a musical
guest on Minnesota Public Radio Presents: A Holiday Stage
Session with Bill Holm with Independent Producer Heather
McElhatton. The Traditions of Christmas: Those You
Want and Those That Are Foisted Upon
You at the Fitzgerald Theater in St.
Paul, MN. This show was taped and then broadcast on Christmas
Day, Sunday December 25, 2005 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on the News and
Information stations of Minnesota Public Radio.
Including 91.1 FM in the Twin Cities.
On February 18, 2005 Christine presented her
first jazz concert in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center
Concert Hall at Macalester College
in St. Paul, MN. She sang the words of William Shakespeare in jazz
settings by Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, John Dankworth and Arthur
Young orchestrated for small combo by pianist/composer Laura Caviani.
The concert was sold out and received high praise.
Christine enjoys playing
